David Cameron hailed Great Britain’s incredible summer of sport as the Queen hosted a glittering Buckingham Palace event for Olympic and Paralympic heroes.

Sportsmen and women who won gold for the nation during the summer’s extravaganza of sport were invited to the palace to mark their achievements.

The Prime Minister joined the athletes and senior figures like Lord Coe who helped make the Games a success at the palace, where the Queen celebrated their efforts with the Duke of Edinburgh, Duchess of Cambridge and other members of the Royal Family.

Mr Cameron said: ‘I think people will look back and just think, ‘what an incredible summer’ – success after success, medal after medal and the whole country putting on its very best face for the world.

‘What matters now is that we maximise the momentum and the legacy following the Olympics and Paralympics.

‘We had a cabinet meeting about that and Seb Coe was there, and we were talking about the physical legacy of East London, the important economic benefits we want, there’s the sporting legacy carried through to Rio and school sport, there’s also the legacy in terms of attitude to disabilities, which I think is a real chance of a step change in our country.’

After the London 2012 Paralympics,
how might all this positive exposure, sporting achievement and discussion around disability affect the future of disabled people?

The Paralympics was in the UK – so immediately grabbed our attention at the end of a phenomenal summer of celebration which started with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June.

Some 2.7 million tickets were sold for the Paralympic Games and the amount of media and television coverage was unprecedented.

In the Paralympic Park bubble, if you try to discuss legacy, the main thought is about the sport.

After winning the final track gold medal of the Games in the Olympic Stadium on Saturday night, South African “bladerunner” Oscar Pistorius said he hoped the success of London 2012 would boost the profile of parasport.

Poverty fear at disability support axe in the UK: 500,000 could see payments cut

As many as 500,000 disabled people could be plunged into poverty by Government benefit cuts, a report warns today.

Hardest Hit, a coalition of 90 disability groups, said replacing Disability Living Allowance with personal independence payments next year may force 50,400 out of work.

It added that up to 500,000 people could see their benefits cut.

The study says George Osborne has already cut support for the disabled by £500million since his 2010 emergency budget.

Campaign chairman Jaspal Dhani said: “Disabled people, those with long-term conditions and their families are already at risk of hardship and face massive barriers to getting into work and education.

“Cuts to the support they depend upon risk pushing them into poverty, debt and isolation.

“The Chancellor has just announced a further £10 billion cut to the welfare budget.

“With £9 billion having already been removed from disability benefits and services in this Parliament, disabled people are already at a tipping point.

“The Government has some urgent choices to make, but must rule out targeting disabled people for further spending cuts in the next Budget and Comprehensive Spending Review.”

Manchester Nursing Home overcome 7 step problem with Stairmatic

Swinton Hall Nursing Home in Manchester have been using the Stairmatic since November 1995.
The large Nursing Home has amongst others a 7 step stairway which is very narrow, so the Stairmatic was the stair climber to allow immobile residents access to this part of the home.

The Grundy family from Bury in Lancashire have been using the Stairmatic battery powered stair climber to enable a disabled family member to carry on using the home even though the staircase is a huge obstacle. The family did not want or have the space for a fixed lift so found the Stairmatic to be a fantastic alternative. No adaptions have been made to the house and when the Stairmatic is not required it is stored away from the stairs leaving the home to run as normal. Baronmead service & maintain the unit on a regular basis for the Grundy family.

Alber Stair Climber with Specialist Seating was our solution to our problem

Our house has a variety of steps outside & full length staircase with landings inside.
Our dilema was to move to a different house or find a solution for moving our 9 year old disabled son up and down these steps with minimal effort, and comfort and allowing us to stay in our family home.
We found the Baronmead website and they showed us a variety of Stair climbing options & advised us on different styles of seating available.
We have been very pleased with the service and product Baronmead have supplied and would recommend them without hesitation.
